Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay learned to love art through the aunt Denise. She was night nurses to afford her aunt the time she needed throughout the day for the love of art, literature, and theater. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt recommended the film to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered through experience that art is a great tool to engage in activism. DuVernay learned to be socially mindful from her mother. DuVernay was a child together with her parents in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Alabama to help inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She began her career as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage at the home of a member on the jury. The duties she was required to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided to not pursue journalism, she moved on to the field of public relations. DuVernay began her career as a junior public relations assistant for a film studio that was small, right after graduating from college. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotional and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
